The Location
Lived Experience of the Intersection
The intersection of Dorchester Ave. and Adams Street, in the heart of 02122, is an epicenter for Boston’s diverse neighborhoods. At this one intersection, Adams St connects Clam Point & Adams Village to the east with Four Corners & Bowdoin Geneva to the west, while Dorchester Ave joins Savin Hill & Jones Hill to the north with Saint Marks & Ashmont to the south.
Because the intersection is constantly crowded with vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles, it is also dangerous: there have been two vehicular homicides in the past five years, and there are near misses that occur daily.
The goals of this project are to create joy, add beauty and clarify pedestrian crossing zones.
Community Input
During Open Streets 2022, we invited residents to imagine a Fields Corner of the future. Children & adults drew pictures and wrote notes about what they wanted for the future of Fields Corner.
The FCMS board referred to this data to make our decisions on the Beautification Grant with OEOI and decided on three projects: updating Rixy Fernandez’s mural, adding to plantings and creating an asphalt mural.
We feel strongly that this artwork addresses the two highest priorities: Safer streets & Fun.
